International Day of Democracy is being celebrated around the world on Saturday 15 September. It was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy. The theme for this year is ‘Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World’.

The day provides an opportunity to review and invigorate the state of democracy in the world and seek answers to the systematic challenges it faces. It also highlights the important role of parliaments capacity to deliver on justice, peace, development and human rights.

The Victorian Parliament will be conducting a series of Democracy Day debates in the Legislative Assembly and Council chambers involving four Victorian universities. Other events planned for the day include: self-guided tours of the main parts of the Parliament Building; an interactive democracy hashtag at the front steps, and a democracy showcase in Queen’s Hall.
